How do I improve MPG??

Hi folks,
I went for a 2003 100bhp TDI PD for economy, trouble is I am nursing it along and only getting low 40's. I commute 12 miles to work each day on mostly free flowing roads and dual carriageways with some City traffic thrown in.
Am I right in thinking it should be doing a bit better than this, I really am keeping the revs down and try not to get the turbo spinning too fiercely if I can help it.
Are there things that I can check at home or would I need to have the car "read" to disclose potentially fuel sapping issues?
Thanks,Will.
