Aftermarket HID bulb/light questions

My B5.5 has had HID dipped beam bulbs fitted, by a previous owner. It's the full job with ballast packs as well (ie not just bulbs).
If I want to fit a standard halogen bulb, is it just a case of uplugging the ballast pack wiring, or can I only fit another HID bulb?
Also regarding spares/replacements, do I just buy any H1-type HID bulb?
