Alloys? Bentley or Merc

Being quite new to all this Passat malarkey, I'm getting a bit confused by all the conflicting stories about what wheels do and do not fit the Passat. A guy round the corner from me has a Golf with Bentley 20" Alloys on it, but someone else has said that Merc AMG wheels fit too. Up to now no-one has mentioned any VW or Audi Alloys that may fit.
So what's the story, do all Merc and Bentley Wheels fit or only certainly sizes? I don't really want to go down the after market route, preferring to go with modifiable alloys off another make.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
