Considering a manual steering rack what fits?

Hi peeps,
After stripping down the engine and front subframe, the power steering parts kept looking messier and messier. I am therefore considering swapping it out for a manual rack.
Those of you who know me, know I only do CHEAP!!
So with this in mind what other rack could be considered as a replacement?
I think I know the answer, and it is nothing else will do, as I seem to remember that MK3's have a narrower front, and they use the Passat gubbings to widen their track. Or am I speaking boll0x?
