road noise

Hi guys,
I dont know if its just my imagination or not but I think that I am experiencing excessive road noise whilst driving.
The noise is definately from the tyres/road combination ,has anyone else experienced such a thing.
Also would anyone be able to say if passats have overly loud engines b5.5 100bhp Tdi-ticking over/running etc,
or is this the norm.
The reason I ask is because my previous car was a Laguna Dci(not in the same league I know)but it was definately a lot quieter running.
