'check brake pads' along with an Odd pedal...

Got the check pads light coming up on the dash (B5.5 PD130 wagon). The brakes dont feel as great at they did when we got the car, so I have picked up new pads ready to change them tomorrow. Thing is the pedal feels funny, in that pressing it stops the car , but if you come to a stop you can press the pedal all the way to the floor (with resistance).... This isnt what I normally class as air in the system or a dead MC. Is it just the front pads being dead and compressing like funk?
