2.0 TDI differences

Hi all,
Stumbled across this forum as thinking of getting a B6 TDI.
Very informative site with some excellent info and tips.
When reading the parkers guide they mention two types of engine on the 2.0 TDI. One being better than the other ( both 140BHP units)
apparently the later - early 2008 is the better
IS there any way to tell the difference visually ( i think the oil cap could be in different places ??) or an engine code ?
Any general advice on picking one up privately ?
