70mph Tyre Blowout! - Lanvigator 235/45Z/R17

At 6.45am this morning on the motorway started hearing a loud noise...
Then bang. Rear passenger tyre blowout. Just about managed to get safely to hard shoulder.
The insurance callout/repair guy said 'never buy part worns!' - but these Lanvigator 235/45Z/R17 were bought new about three or four years ago.
Yes, I know they aren't the greatest brand, but:
Looking at pics, have I hit something, or can tyres go like that??
