e-brake with manual transmission

This is directed at all those with above, not only B7's. I am curious as to how confident you are in the safe operation of the E-parking brake. Specifically, how many of you folk always leave the car in gear when parked? I am aware that this is recommended in the manual, but to my mind this indicates VW's lack of confidence in the system. I have been driving manual cars for 35 years, and have never been advised to or considered doing this before. I am finding it a hard habit to get into. Interested to hear how many do, how many don't.....
