Passat B4 saloon worthy buy?

Post by tris80 »

Hello everyone,

I just popped to see a friend who is selling a '94 Passat saloon 2l cl in metallic blue. Can't remember the last time I saw one of these on the road so I had a quick look. I'm trying to work out if it's worth buying or if it's gonna be a money pit.

Bodywork.

No dents on body, no apparent rust on shell.
Front jacking points look a little suspect, as is rear n/s sill. General rust underneath.

Boot area wet, leak somewhere
Headliner detached
Blue interior otherwise good, no rips.

Engine, 150k 2.0l 8v

No coolant in reservoir (ouch!)
Engine starts and runs well, quiet.

Checked oil cap prior to starting and no moisture.
Engine running for 10 mins, still lost of white smoke and exhaust smells a little burnt.
Stop engine and now oil cap has mayo. Head gasket suspect!

ABS light on when running
Coolant light flashing, probably low level.

Been off the road for a couple of years.

So, most likely a head gasket at the very least with potential rings if overheated. Service and brakes including cam belt too. Welding and probably some other stuff.

Basically I'm asking if these non tdi, non estate passats are worth anything, or are they just an old vw these days. The car is cheap, scrap value money.....

Would you guys go for it?

cheers,

Tris.
