Electrical Noise - Infotainment System Resets

Post by Passdave2011 »

Hi all at UK Passats,

I'm David, new here and have a lovely 2011 2.0 TDI BlueMotion Tech Sport Estate, sitting with only 72,000 miles. Sounds lovely... but...

I have stated to find an issue with what seems like an electrical fault which I first noticed when driving. There was, what can only be described, as a fairly loud electrical boom noise coming through the speakers, although it also felt the noise was above me....at which point the car infotainment system went blank and reset itself. This happened a number of times on one drive home.

Move on 4 weeks, and this electrical noise occurs, even if the car is unlocked and the door is open, without the key in the ignition. It occurs randomly.

I have checked the stereo fuse, and the voltage fuse, all seem to be ok, but from this point I'm stuck. Doing some reading, it's suggested the infotainment system could be faulty and needs to be replaced, but would this happen even if the car is open without the key in the ignition? I'm happy to try and replace the stereo/nav, but I watched a youtube video saying something about coding on the stereo, so not sure if I should avoid doing this myself and get an expert in?

Any assistance would be gratefully received.
