Runs for a few seconds then dies....

Help!

I have a 2004 B5.5 AWX with 55k miles that I'm ressurecting after it was parked for many many years at my Dads. It was green with algae, flat tyres, siezed brakes, the lot.

Its has a service, timing belt, clutch, wheels, tyres, all new brakes and many other gremlins sorted out over the last year. Its started first turn of the key to move it so I can get other cars into the garage, and last week I braved its first road run to get its first decent amount of diesel in 10 years.

On the way home it was way down on power, and when I pulled into the yard it conked out and stopped. It would start and run for a few seconds, then the revs would drop right down and it would die again. Thinking it mightve been poo stirred up and pushed through to the fuel filter, I changed it again. No change....starts and runs for a few seconds belching black smoke then splutters to a stop. I've pulled the pump out of the tank (which is getting power OK) and apart from a couple of bits of dirt on the gauze, everthings OK. Pulled the tandem pump apart thinking there would be something obvious, but there's not. It'll still start ad run for a few seconds then die out.

Have you any ideas on what I should try next? It definitely seems fuel related, but I don't want to fire the parts cannon without a degree of certainty on what the problem is!
