DPF and engine light

Hi all,
My DPF warning came on last week but, like an idiot, I never got round to running a regen. I continued to use the car and now have an engine warning light and flashing coil. My cheap fault code reader only comes up with a DPF code, but when I tried a regen run last night, nothing would clear. It's a B8, 1.6
Any help much appreciated
