DPF regen/ stuck in limp mode

Recently DPF light came on ~(no limp mode), drove it for a week or so like this and figured I would clear it by taking car on faster roads in 3rd or 4th gear around 2500rpm. However, I think the road wasn't quite long enough and it only did like 15 mins @2500rpm about 55mph and it did not regen.
A week or so later, went to take it on a longer stretch of road but as I was setting off, the car went into limp mode! I realise now as soon as I got the DPF light I should have immediately found a long road and not took my time about it....

Am I right in thinking that my only option now will be to do a forced regen using VCDS?
My mate had VCDS but he thinks he left it in his old house when he moved. Will a snap-on scanner/ diag also do it? I know someone with one that may possibly be able to help.
