126k on the clock & the engine light came on, ( 2.0l tdi estate) cleared it, a few days later it was on again, ( EGR valve) don't trust VW since I saw kids working on them at the local dealership, so I asked my auto engineer pal if he could sort it, & while he was at it to give EVERYTHING on the car a good going over, including the cam belt, etc.
So, new genuine cam belt, all pulleys & idlers, new multi-vee belt, water pump, oil change, oil, air, pollen & fuel filters, rear pads & gaiters.
So far so good, THEN, a fairly major strip down to get at the EGR valve inc undertay, suspension crossmember, steering-rack exhaust, turbo etc, & we both decided to replace with new (£540.00) rather than risk a cleanout & for it to re-occur later. This EGR valve is a fair-sized unit that sits between the rear of the engine & bulkhead, about 300mm long, with a motor, gearbox, its own watercooled rad built-in, quite a complex bit of kit actually.
all in all, £1300 & for the huge amount of work involved, i'm a happy-bunny, & it once again drives like a new-un!!
I have the 'old' unit ( it looks new) & am going to strip it down simply to see if it CAN be renovated, watch this space!!
