shot syncros and more

Post by gonch1980 »

Hi All,

I’ve just bought a 52 Plate 130(AVF) Sport 6 Speed (FRK) Estate but it came with a few issues. The biggest of which is appears to be worn Syncros! The gears grind into 2nd and 3rd (unless you double de-clutch), 1st, 4th-6th are ok. Next week its going back for MoT re-test as it failed on high emissions(temp sender was intermittent- now replaced and appears serviceable), CV boot fallen off (new one fitted), and a damaged brake hose (replaced), whilst it’s on the ramp and easier access, as an initial step I’m going to replace the gearbox oil.

I did buy this car cheap and aware of the issues, but I also know that the gearbox oil hasn’t been changed or even checked in at least the last four years. Now I realise that maybe the syncros are already shot, but I thought this would be the easiest and cheapest way to start the healing. Also with the rarity of the 6 speed boxes, and probably a £500+ bill for a repair, what’s the harm in trying?

So looking around the net I’ve found that one person recommends Fuchs TITAN GEAR SYN 75W-90 which improved the feel and change of his gearbox over the standard oil, but i think my issues are a bit beyond the 'change feel', so I was thinking about the 'PENZZOIL SYNCROMESH FLUID', that I’ve found a few stories saying that it completely stopped their gear grinding issues.

So before I do this I thought I’d run it past the experts for any opinions on my plan, or if maybe you’ve had the same issues and any tips you have?

And whilst were at it is there anything else worth me looking at before it’s too late? I’ve owned a B5 98 plate 110 saloon for about 11 years so am aware of some of the potential pit-falls like the plenum holes blocking etc., but estates and PD engines are new to me, so any prompts welcome.
