Runabouts from the VAG Family

Post by Weble »

Hey guys, our circumstances at the moment are such that we only need one main car, which is our Passat, I have two mk2 Fiesta's that are more of a hobby, but get used on the vary rare occasion we need two cars. Usually once or twice a month!

However, our situation is changing and may soon need a car each, the Fiesta's are reliable enough, and cheap enough to run, but I don't fancy putting them into daily use, especially once winter arrives. So i'm thinking about a runabout.

Now only having one set of NCB on the Passat means insurance might hurt a bit, although Direct line give named driver discounts for my other half so might not be too bad in her name! So a few cars i'm thinking about so far

VW Lupo (maybe an early Fox as the prices are coming down fast)
VW Polo
Skoda Fabia

Age/Price wise im looking upto £3k. However I know very little of these cars, at the moment the Fabia is top of the list for having more doors, but being cheaper than polo's. So i'm after opinions, experience if anyone has any? I'm looking at 1.2 Petrols (are these 3 cylinder?) 1.4 Petrols (Pre 2001 as the tax is much cheaper) or the 1.9 TDI (Post 2001, again because tax becomes cheaper).

I'm also noticing a 1.7 and 1.4 Diesel in the Lupo but I know nothing of these.

As crazy as it sounds on the insurance front I might be better going for something performance orientated as apposed to "normal" workhorse and grab a specialist policy from somewhere, thinking Fabia vRS here but who knows  . But this is all things to look at if plan A fails.

Thanks guys.
