R36 focal audio components

Post by scorchio69 »

Well guys after getting some time to myself during our new borns sleep times I thought I would get the focals into the front doors.

Removing the door trims was a piece of cake and soon got over vw need to rivet on the speakers, drilled out the rivets and rivited on the new adapters, drilled a hole for the mid bass cable to come through and connect up to the massive crossover, just managed to find a space for these next to the window motors .

The only stumbling block was the tweeters, the focal audio ones are about 6-8 mm bigger than the standard ones plus the contoured shape of the covers meant a bit of thinking was needed. Now I had ordered the optional dynaudio tweeters from bold sport but after they continually went back order I eventually gave up. In the photos I ended up using expanding foam to fill the void and hold the tweeter mount in place

I used a carrier bag taped into place to allow me to remove the foam once it had cured

Secured the tweeter mount onto the carrier bag

Filled the void completely with expanding foam

Foam trimmed down with a bit extra depth left to act as cushioning against the inner door frame

You can see the tweeter mount held firmly in place

And the finished job with wiring tied into place for neatness
