Had a few teething problems earlier this week with my TDi, the temp gauge started wavering from 90 degrees down to 70ish when at full operating temperature.
We assumed it was a faulty thermostat, and so (as the main stealer is 15 miles away and it was 5pm) bunged an OEM one in.
Ran the old girl up and the gauge went nicely back up to the 90 mark and sat there unwavering.
However, when my mechanic was checking it over, he noticed the bottom hose was two different temperatures, hot at the stat end and cold at the rad end. He checked the operation of the viscous fan and said it seemed to be working ok, then checked the bottom of the rad and that was cold.
As it had a pump in Feb/March time, and the rad was already weeping quite a bit, we decided to change the rad to see if this would sort it out.
The rad got changed Thursday and since then, the bottom hose has been cool to the touch. My mechanic said when I picked it up that it seemed a bit cool, but it possibly wasn't warmed up fully and to see how I got on, thinking along the lines of fitting a VW stat if it stayed cool.
The car was out on the road last night for 13 hours and barely stopped and when my driver brought it back, I checked it.
Although it hadn't used any water, the hose is still cool and I am worried.
The gauge is still sitting at 90 and not budging but I am worried about cooking the engine and I don't trust it.
The header tank didn't feel that warm either at first but my driver did say he'd topped it up before swapping over and this seems to have rectified itself now.
It's not smoking, not smelling, doesn't seem to be using water and I have hot and cold blowers in the interior.
Any ideas guys?
How warm is your hose??
