What is wrong, if anything?

Hi all,

I Have a VW Passat B6 2.0 TDI 140, which makes a whining noise a similar to a milk float but more mechanical and higher pitched but not overly loud or remotely police siren like. The car has done 56,000 miles, have a full service history and runs fine. I have no excess smoking or loss of power. On idle, the car makes the usual bulgarian tractor diesel noise, but when accelerating I can hear the low growl of the engine superimposed on top of the higher pitched noise.

You hear the milk float type noise.

I have had the car serviced last week at a VW specialist garage (not main dealer but ex main dealer staffed place).

They have suggested that the turbo is on its way out and that the vanes are most likely stuck.

I am a little dubious about this and I get the feeling they just want me to pay for a turbo in the next 20,000 miles or so.

To me it sounds like there is air getting in somewhere it shouldn't such as in a leaky hose/ gasket? When reved at a stand still with bonnet open and listening I can hear a lot of air sucking in when putting foot on accelerator/ hiss release when taking foot off of accelerator.

It seems awfully low milage for a turbo to start to fail. The car is mainly thrashed along country lanes so I can't imagine I am not clearing deposits from the turbo which are likely to make it stick.

Basically I don't want to fork out for a new turbo if its not faulty and wish to know if the advise I am getting is likely to be correct and my suspicions unfounded.

Do sticky vanes create a noise or could it be something completely un turbo related?

I live in the Portsmouth area if anyone can suggest a good Diesel turbo specialist who can tell me what it is likely to be.

I appreciate any advice you may have.
