After market alarms

Is it ok to fit a rcl alarm to a B5 without interfering with the factory alarm system? My key (2 button banjo style) is buggered and i reckon it'd be cheaper to buy an alarm and use that rather than getting a new key. If i could disable the original alarm that'd be even better
