Help please CLIMATRONIC DOESN'T ILLUMINATE

I've put it in a new unit it works great but doesn't illuminate. I bought a unit from a b5 that works too and that doesn't illumiate either. my original unit illuminates but doesn't let you change the temp.

any ideas what the problem might be?

do i nee the exact same model number as the original?


any advice appreciated as its hard to use the heater at night.
