reprogramming key fob

Hi guys,i own a 1998 tdi passat my battery went down in my key fob and i changed the battery,but now central locking dosnt work with fob.I recently had to change my boot lock which only locks via using fob which i cant do now.found this on internet ( --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remote Control Programming (1997 ON)

Procedure
1. Switch Ignition ON and leave the key in the ignition.

2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the Drivers door using a second
key.

3. Using the remote control press the Unlock button once, and the horn
will sound once.

4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate the coding
procedure. The remote control will now be programmed).

but the problem i have is ive only got 1 key so cannot follow instructions above.Has any1 any ideas how i might be able to activate the fob again without having to actualy go to a vw dealer.
