heater plugs

being a tight git i'm looking to do a few jobs on my b5 1.9tdi estate 110 bhp myself rather than paying someone who knows what they are doing,yes i know that does'nt sound very reassuring however when you're skint it starts to makes sense anyway some advice is sought.is it an involved job to change the heater plugs?i belive that if the heater symbol flashes at you then they are kernackered is this correct?also my rear axle bushes(the big ones with the three bolts holding them on) have had it,is there anything to watch out for when getting stuck in and where is the best place to get decent quality parts.
