My steering on my Passat has been driving me potty since I got it, anytime I turned the wheel I got a groaning from the column, especially at low speed. I tried squirting some Silicone Spray on the steering wheel boss which would help a little for a few miles then it would return.
This morning I decided I'd had enough and started to take the column plastics off. I got the upper cover off ok but the lower wouldn't come off. That's when I found a 4mm hex head bolt that seemed to screw into the column. On a hunch I backed it off a quarter turn and the groaning was 90% gone when I went for a short run. Another quarter turn and it's completely gone!
So the question.... this is obviously not designed to hold a piece of trim on. I'm guessing it's some sort of adjustment for the steering, perhaps to make the steering feel heavier???
Anyone know what it's for and if it's meant to be tight??

Fixed groaning steering - but what did I do?
