Passat Brakes

Hi guys, new to all this, been a vdub fan for a while. Just bought a b3 estate to mess about with, trying to do a few bits and bobs, want style but on a budget (Understanding wife, but doesn't quite have my vision!). Got a question. I know the done thing is adapters and a nice set of porsche rims, but wonder if it's possible instead to change the brakes from a later 5 stud vw, giving better stopping power and more importantly the chance to fit a wider choice of vw/audi wheels? Does anyone know if this can be done and how big a job it would be, or am i just on drugs?
