Oil overfull, engine damage?

Post by daz_j »

Hi again all, hoping someone can advise and maybe save my Passat please. It's a 2008 B6 estate CBAB 2.0 TDi 140PS; the issue in summary is:

Out of the blue I got a console warning message along the lines of 'oil pressure fault, do not drive'. There were no prior issues, the car was driving as normal, and as I was only a couple of minutes away I carried on home.

I checked the oil level at the dipstick and found it to be overfull; I drained the oil and >5L came out. No evidence of water present, I assume fuel has got in there somehow but it wasn't noticeable.

I refilled the sump with supermarket full synthetic 5W40 to just above min on the dipstick, and tried a little test drive. This went ok for about 2 miles, but then the engine went seriously unhappy - misfiring accompanied by odd noises, I pulled in and parked up.

I had it towed to my local garage, decent guys normally but not VW specialists. Their scan hasn't brought up any codes other than 'oil pressure fault'. They haven't been able to identify the cause of the problems, but on the basis of listening to the engine have suspicions of expensive damage (oil pump and turbo were two possibilities mentioned) and have advised it's not worth persevering with.

I understand they're trying to avoid me throwing good money after bad, but I was hoping for something a bit more conclusive before sending it to the breakers, so wondering if the symptoms described ring a bell with anyone? Any advice welcome thank you.
