Airbag module coding, help needed

Hi all,
Looking for some help/advice
My dad has a 2008 b6 2.0tdi Passat
The airbag module became faulty, he purchased another 2nd hand one with the same part numbers on eBay, however once fitted it does not recognise it. Is it possible to recode a 2nd hand module? Looking at the numbers on the label, I cannot see anything that corresponds to what comes up on vcds so is there a way of working out the coding from just the label?
