Passat B6 2.0 TDI Re-installing twin balancer gear driven oil pump

Hi, my first post so please don't shout at me if I've put this in the wrong section. I had oil pump failure about a month ago and finally got around to taking the sump off yesterday and having a look. The 77mm hex shaft has rounded off so I have ordered a new one. I was a bit silly as I removed the whole pump assembly even though I didn't need to. My question is when I re-install the pump assembly do I have to worry about timing it to the crankshaft or doesn't it matter. I have spent all day hunting but can't find the info online. Also for some mad reason I loosened the four bolts holding the gear on the end of balance shaft 1 and notice that the bolt holes are elongated, just wondered why this is. Any help would be gratefully received.
