Front CV joint boot

Hi,

I just got my 2006 2.00tdi back from MOT, it passaed but with an advisory that one of the CV boots is badly deteriorated. The garage quoted £130 to repair explaining that the whole axle assembly has to be removed to replace the boot. I am aware that there are universal replacement boots that are split and can be fitted without removal of the axle assembly but are these effective and reliable? £130 is too much to unvest in my old workhorse.
