Electrical Assisted Power Steering Problem

Post by lawzie »

Hi All,

I have a 2009 B6 Passat Estate 2.0 TDi

Recently, I have been experiencing an intermittent fault with the power steering. When fully loaded (with bikes on the roof), the steering assist has gone very heavy around off-camber right hand bends.

My local mechanic has been able to log a fault but no further details. He doesn't want to replace until the problem becomes more persistent (it was fine on the road test).

Having done some reading, I've discovered that the electrical assist increases and decreases assistance dependent on the speed the vehicle is travelling and, interestingly, when the sensor detects strong cross-winds.

I just wondered if anyone else has experienced similar problems or if it is possible the fault could be due to a faulty sensor, hence negating the need to replace the entire rack.

I hope someone may be able shed some glimmer of hope or suggestions that mean I don't have the cost of a new rack.

Thanks
