How to replace handbrake motor?

Hi, I have to fit a new handbrake motor for one of my calipers, I also have vcds. I'm currently not using the handbrake as the old motor has been removed.
Can someone explain the process of installing the new motor with regards to what position the piston needs to be in before fitting the motor. Does it need to be wound in or out etc
Can I do this without vcds. Will it calibrate itself once fitted and the park button operated?
