Low MPG and random smoking when stopped

2.0li diesel 160,000 miles.
In recent weeks i've noticed that the readout on the dash for mpg has taken a near 10MPG drop from usually around 52/54MPG to about 42. The car doesn't appear to be running any different although i suppose the air con has been on a lot more than normal due to recent hot weather, is that enough for a 10mpg drop?
on top of that and my main question, every now and then i'll be sitting at lights and a black smog will come past the car, not as thick as you see from some cars on the motorway, but very noticable. its not blue or white, oil and water levels are normal. Any idea what it might be? im worried as the MOT is on the way and if it does it there it won't pass.
im currently down two glow plugs which are to be replaced next week, but my understanding is these wont be used once the car is started.
