The dreaded Glow Plug Alarm

I realise i'm probably not alone in this but any kind of answer would be great.
I've been getting an intermittent "glow plug" flashing alarm which i just restart the car and it's fine. However on Friday night I had such and alarm but when i went to restart it was shuddering ... I went about 100 yards and it conked out( similar to stalling feeling) and wouldn't restart. When the AA guy came out he got it restarted by boosting the battery and I got home fine. I've been to Halfords and got a battery check and both the battery and alternator are fine. He suggested getting the glow plugs changed... could this be the issue or am i looking at something else?
