Keyfob Replacement

Well after a ling time away from passats im finally back with another one but i may have bought into some issues already.

I only have 1 key fob for the car and only picked it up last week, the car wont lock from the fob and the button doesnt seem to move but i can unlock (intermittently) but i can unlock the boot everytime so i guess i need a new keyfob, treied to sync the key but it doesnt make any difference

Question is do i need to buy a NEW keyfob or can i buy a second hand one (ebay) and code it to the car. Im a mechanic but not experienced with the electronics or keys and we do have vag com and snap on solus
