Tailgate lock

Hi I have a 2006 TDI estate. the problem I have is the tailgate lock dose not operate I can open and close the tailgate but the lock doesn't catch. At the same time this happened the rear washer and wiper stopped working. I have checked the wiring where it enters the tailgate through the rubber boot that is OK. Has any one got any ideas please.
