Diagnostic tool

Hi guys,

Im looking for a diagnostic tool for my 2009 2.0 TDI Passat B6 but dont want to spend shed loads of money on one. any suggestions? only thing is i require it to be able to tell me how clogged my DPF is and start a regeneration if needed. I've heard a lot about VCDS which i guess is diagnostic software to go with a Ross-Tech scanner but seems extremely pricey.
