Passat 3.2 engine VS Golf R32 - Differences?

Looking to purchase my first passat and only interested in the 3.2 variant.

Been doing some research into performance mods etc and was under the impression that the 3.2 in the passats was the same engine as the r32 in the golfs.

I have however read there are some differences and they are not VR engines?

Have a I read wrong? Is the passat 3.2 the same as the a3 and the TT? But different to the r32?

Doesn't concern me much, but looking at tuning etc.
