VCDS for the B6

I've just tried to give my recently acquired B6 TFSI it's first scan and I got the dreaded "no response from controller" message. I'm using one of the cheap blue eBay cables which worked fine in my old B5.5.

Do I need a different cable? If not any suggestions to get it working?

Ross Tech website is unclear.
