BMR 170 running issues.HELP!

Hi all,

I would very much appreciate some help on a problem with my 57 tdi SEL 170 DSG.

It can be running really well then suddenly become very lumpy and sluggish to drive. When this happens the engine note becomes very muted (you can barely hear the injectors) and it idles either very high (1000+ rpm) or the revs drop right off and when you blip the throttle it 'chuffs ' until it recovers.

Bizarrely the interior also fills with engine fumes through the vents when stationary but there is no smoking from the exhaust. Then after anything from 5-30min it will snap back to normal again.

I've removed the DPF and had it cleaned by my local Terraclean agent (the back pressure reading was excessive even though I've never had the emissions light come on in 5 years and 70k).

Removed and cleaned the EGR (wasn't very dirty) and checked it mechanically.


Cleaned the MAF and no fault codes are logged.

This has been happening for about a year now, only occasionally at first, but now it's every day and it's doing my head in!
