Best ways to lower B6 Wagon?

Hi all,

Looking at lowering my b6 Variant soon and wonder if just springs and standard shocks, or coilovers are best?

Would love air but price doesn't allow lol! coilovers I can find as cheap as 150 on ebay but hesitant as they may be poo but whats people experiences? any pictures before and after would be much appreciated!!
