Supermarket fuel vs Branded fuel

Much has been said about the benefits and perils of supermarket vs branded fuels, but what is the difference? Supermarket fuels come from the same refineries as the others don't they? The pumps are marked up with a BS number which means they conform to the British Standard for fuel so why do so many people say to not use them at all?

I have tried both and to be honest haven't noticed much difference in economy or performance but I've read with interest what others have said about cars when serviced by the technicians who've carried out the services and mentioned how they can tell if it's been using supermarket fuel.

Also, is there any real benefit in using the premium brand of fuels such as Shell V-Power Nitro+ ? Is it worth the premium you pay?

Just thought I'd ask.....
