B6 2.0 140 TDI estate. White smoke on overun. But not always

Hi,
Recently purchased a 2007 Estate. Has started to blow out white smoke on the overrun. Not all the time. There is also a whisle at about 2000-3000 rpm. Not loud but was not there before. The engine oil and filter plus air filter have been replaced but has made no difference. I have not changed the fuel filter yet or cleaned the EGR.
I also own a B5 1.9 estate and have never in all the 100,000 miles we have owned it had any problems like this. Yes I have read loads of stuff on the web about blown turbos. EGR problems etc etc. Before I talk to our local VW specialist. Would appreciate any view you guys have on what the causes might be and any tips on solving them.
