EDIT: I have since discovered that the refrigerant control valve (RCV, also known as pressure valve) in the compressor was not functioning correctly. This was causing my system to not build up any pressure and so reduced cooling. A side effect of this was that my radiator fans did not turn on with the A/C, due to lack of pressure - this is one of the signs of a dodgy RCV. If you are having air-con problems I would suggest having a read through some of the US forums (http://tdiclub.com, http://vwvortex.com etc) as there are many people over there that have had VW tell them they need a new compressor, drier, evaporator etc. (with a bill ranging into the thousands of dollars), when an RCV or G65 replacement was the correct fix. The user RichardSEL on these forums is very knowledgable and is keen to help you out if you start a thread or send him a PM. User 'DanG144' on http://tdiclub.com is also great at diagnosing A/C faults and threads such as the following are worth a read over:

Hello,
I recently bought a 2006 VW Passat 2.0T FSI and my air-conditioning is not blowing very cold at all.
We all know of the compressor problems associated with VWs/Audis/Skodas etc around 2005-2007, and it is most likely a failed compressor, but I'm just looking for some solid advice on the matter.
These are the figures I get from VCDS of the compressor with the engine at idle and under load:
Idle:
Under load:
I'm not entirely sure how to read those figures, but it seems that the compressor isn't building up any pressure?
If the compressor is knackered, then I know that the procedure is to replace compressor, evaporator, dryer etc and have the system flushed and re-gassed, but would it be possible to simply replace the compressor and flush/re-gas the system without those other things? I've been offered a cheap, working compressor and I would like to try and keep it as cheap a fix as possible.
Thanks in advance.
