Major problems starting car!

Hi,

My Passat B6 2.0 Tdi has had an intermittent electric fault for a while, now the car will hardly start at all.

Sometimes it comes up engine fault and the coil light comes on, sometimes the steering light, other times there the whole instrument panel is blank. The engine won't turn over, the only solution is to wait 5 mins and try again.

I've heard something about steering lock failure causing starting issues.

Anyone had similar problems?

P.S. It's booked into VW later this week, hopefully it's nothing too expensive.
