Steering lock defective

Hello. Have a 2007 model..when pulling key out get a clicking noise then steering wheel flashes (+ beeps once) on dash. No steering lock now but no problems with engine starting or cutting out etc. A mate who works on VW's ran diagnostic but no fault codes came up. Anyone with a similar problem? Is this a case of needing a new steering lock unit (recoded) & how much generally through dealer? I believe a steering lock check is now part of the MOT. Thanks
