Tyres - Any advice on Brand?

Right, I have just racked up 10,000miles in the Passat and the front tyres are just about on the wear indicator. I realise it's a big car with a big lump of iron over the front wheels but must say I expected slightly better wear (I got 8-12k miles per set in a near 300bhp FWD hot hatch :o )

Anyhow can't say I have been impressed by the std fit Continental tyres, good in the rain but otherwise the are fairly indifferent.

I was looking at Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 from previous experience these are excellent tyres but I have never tried them on the Passat...

Any other recommendations?

Also...what are peoples thoughts on pairs of new tyres...better on the front or on the rear????

Tyres are 235/45/17 97W extra load btw
