Go on Checkatrade or Trustatrader and have a look at the ratings and reviews of garage services local to you. That's what I did 5 years ago for my head replacement, chose a well rated one, got a reasonable quote, had the work done and the car is still running nicely. VW specialists or VW approved would be best.

I just checked and a main dealer in Ipswich can do a belt and pump for £449, that doesn't seem bad for a main dealer.

Have you tried ClickMechanic for a free quote? At least it will give you an idea of an average cost for the job. The belt kits themselves with new water pump (Gates, INA, Delco etc.), bolts, tensioner and idler bearings range from £90 to £140 retail. With locking tools fairly easy for a DIYer with reasonable knowledge to do. Some come with a new double ended threaded tensioner stud but it is debatable as to whether it should be changed or not. I left the original one in as it was tight enough and a good quality version but these are a known weak point and must be fitted properly to avoid problems later. A few in the past have been over / under tightened causing them to work loose or fail.

Its interesting why Contitech and Dayco timing belts come with new studs, but Vw genuine kit does not. Probably Vw wants us to buy them separate, knowing them... mine is coming to 200k so belt is due soon. Was replaced 4 years ago with 160k

I got the main dealer to do it, they gave us a car for the day, checked over our car and sent us a video report, picked up a few minor problems, they replaced a buld and gave it a valet. I know it cost a little bit more than an indi but it was done properly and with no dramas, my local indi said he times them up with drill bits so I reckon it was worth the extra.
