Oil warning light

Post by scooby111 » Fri Oct 06, 2017 7:08 pm

Today I drove from Manchester to Kent. I stopped at the services on the m1. We had refreshments then I went to start the car and got an oil warning light with the message check oil. I checked the level which seemed ok but I added a bit anyway. Tried again and message didn't come back and the drove fine with no problems and to Kent in traffic a good distance and about two to three hours.
When I arrived at the destination I shut the engine down and give it a few minutes and tried again. I got the yellow oil can with waves underneath warning. Checked the oil level again and it was fine!
Let the cool down and went back to it, tried it again and no warning message.
It's a bkp 2008 with the geared knd modded oil pump done by a reputable garage with plenty of experience in doing that job!
I'm obviously a bit worried but I don't think there is anything wrong. No limp mode or noticeable change in performance! No warning symbols could it be due to the temp, the car rarely gets a good run and is well maintained!

Could be a problem with the level sensor wiring or the sensor itself. The cable is draped over the top of the subframe and pretty exposed. It's also one of the most commonly snagged or disconnected items when work is done under the car. Might have a bad connection or wire damage.

Have you scanned the car for fault codes?

I've not scanned it yet as my cable is at home. I have one
Of thoes bluetooth micro things in the car for android. I'll see if that works.
I only just had new tyres and front wheel alignment done I don't know if they could have disturbed something doing that?
The oil was changed less than 6 months ago and castroll, there's no sign of oil leaking and the level is fine, the pump has been done and I'm still bricking it. The car always picks the worst possible times to misbehave.

Started up the car this morning no warning lights just left it idling while trying to get odb dangle to connect but no joy with that!
The car sounds exactly the same as normal. I shut it down then switched the ignition on and no fault lights again!

Anyway I did a scan and I got all kind of weird electrical faults

I've seen the fault before In Address 16: Steering wheel 1 Fault Found:

00883 - Ignition Switch (D) Terminal S
012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit - Intermittent
I've never looked into as I had no problems I've read that this fault can cause weird problems but i'm not sure where to start with it?
Also I'm hoping it's just a loose wire or bad contact from when the steering wheel was upgraded. It's not causing or caused any problems before!
The ignition switch sounds like a costly job, so I can only keep my fingers crossed. I'm not sure why after a long run I would get these faults, when I don't normally?

I would clear the faults and take it for a run, see if they reappear. My battery went flat last week and I got loads of dodgy faults. ... I charged the battery up, took it for a run and now back to the usual 2 faults that bore me but i can ignore.
Good luck in sorting it

"from when the steering wheel was upgraded"
Might still be related or just a pure coincidence that the ignition has gone kaput, which is on the list of common issue with these cars.

I cleared the faults and I've been driving around local journeys. The oil fault message warning hasn't reoccured, which was what I was worried about. I'm not having any problems with the car.
When I scanned the car after faults had been cleared and driven for approximately a week before the scan. I still get the steering, ign fault but none of the other strange faults.
I've not yet looked at the wiring or anything else as I'm not having any driving issues!

In my brief research on the ign fault I got the impression that could be expensive ! am I right ?

Can be expensive if it is the micro switches in the steering column or the electrical part of the ignition switch. Could also be a loom issue caused by the fitting of the new steering wheel upgrade that is now surfacing.
