2006 Passat keeps cutting out

Hi can anyone help my passat keeps cutting out. I am driving and then without warning the engine cuts off, but also if I stop the car and try to switch it back on a short while later it won't start. The lights come on and then it makes a noise then the lights go off and it won't come on. It's driving me mad any ideas what's wrong? thanks in advance.
